Deaton, Raut win 2021 CLAS Graduate Excellence Awards

Two physics graduate students received awards from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences last week.

James Deaton received the 2021 College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Graduate Student Excellence Teaching Award for his consistent willingness to go above and beyond what is asked as a teaching assistant, and to take on increasingly higher responsibilities, culminating with teaching the department’s Nuclear Physics course with only a few days’ notice this spring.

Prakash Raut received the 2021 College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Graduate Student Excellence in Research and Creative Achievement Award for his super-resolution microscopy contributions to the fields of membrane cell biology, toxicology, and virology.  Advisor Sam Hess praised Prakash for his perseverance, his hard work, and his willingness to adapt in constantly changing, chaotic circumstances.

Congratulations to both of the awardees, and our thanks to them both for their efforts in the department at at UMaine.
