Three graduate students advance to candidacy in Fall 2019

In the fall of 2019, three physics graduate students made the transition from “PhD student” to “PhD candidate” by passing a Thesis Proposal Defense.  This involved preparing a grant-proposal-like document that was submitted to a committee of four department faculty, including their dissertation advisor, and then giving an oral presentation with public and closed-door question sessions.

William Riihiluoma: Investigation of Student Understanding of Representations of Probability Concepts Within Quantum Mechanics

Alex Koch: Application of Machine Learning Techniques to Classify and Identify Galaxy Merger Events in the CANDELS Fields

Andrew Teller: Utilizing Extended Mass Functions of Primordial Black Holes in Supermassive Black Hole Formation

Congratulations to Will, Alex, and Andrew!
