Physics Colloquium - Spring 2005 - Mapping the Atmosphere of VV Cephei with the Hubble Space Telescope

Dept of Physics & Astronomy
University of Maine, Orono, Maine

Presents

 Wendy Hagen Bauer
Wellesley College

Mapping the Atmosphere of VV Cephei with the Hubble Space Telescope

VV Cephei is a binary system consisting of an M supergiant with an extensive atmosphere and wind, and a hot companion, probably a main-sequence B star. Every 20 years the small, hot component goes into eclipse behind the M supergiant, and we can use its orbital motion to map out the structure of the M supergiant's chromosphere and wind. I will show spectra obtained during total eclipse and egress from eclipse with the Hubble Space Telescope and discuss what they have taught us about the supergiant's chromosphere and wind.
