Interfacial Science: Engineering Surfaces
The physical and chemical properties of an interface between two media mediate many critical industrial and biological processes, from detergency to biological recognition. As a consequence interfacial science is a powerful tool in the creation and optimization of devices, products, and processes in a large number of diverse fields. To illustrate the utility of interfacial science, its application in a range of fields will be given, including: non-classical transport mechanisms of signal peptideless proteins, the functionalization of sensor surfaces for neurotoxin detection, and the creation of carbon nanomaterials from lignin.
