Heat Transfer and the First Law of Thermodynamics

In this lecture, I will discuss heat transfer and the First Law of Thermodynamics.  We will begin with a historical look at the First Law, specifically Joule’s experiments and his observations on work and energy.  From these beginnings, the definition of the internal energy function can be established and by extension, the First Law of Thermodynamics.  Concepts such as the difference between heat and work will be discussed as well as using the First Law to examine the internal energy of an ideal gas.  Lastly, we will build on our understanding of heat by examining ways in which heat is transferred by discussing conduction, convection, and radiation.
